I am not a fan of Daylight Savings Time. Not that it matters to me what time we call it when the sun sets or rises. If the day starts darker, fine. If the day ends darker, fine. It is the abrupt change that bothers me.
The days get shorter slowly. Every day it gets light a little later and gets dark a little earlier. The days get pared down until the solstice. I adjust as this happens. I know that the days are shrinking. I know that if I rise the same time as a week prior, it will be darker. I know to expect darkness sooner each day.
And then things shift by an hour. Suddenly the day ends sooner. Sun setting at 5:30? Actually no, now it is 4:30. Our days are so often ruled by the clock that this change always feels disruptive. Why can’t we just pick which one we want? Why the disruption twice every year?
I know that there has been talk of making one or the other permanent. Some states already do it (looking at you Arizona) and I am a fan of the idea. I don’t even care which one–permanent standard time or permanent daylight savings time. But we can’t seem to just make it happen. Sure, some people love the time change. I gain an extra hour today! I mean, I guess, but I would rather slowly get used to the seasonal change. Plus, I would not have to figure out how to change the clock on the microwave, since I use that one more than I should probably admit. Seems like that alone makes it worth it.
